Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Slate ("Slate," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use our website, iOS app, Slate Block hardware, and related services.
By using Slate, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
1. What Slate Does
Slate helps users block selected apps, app categories, websites, or device distractions during routines such as sleep, studying, mornings, evenings, or focus sessions. Slate may use Apple Screen Time-related frameworks, NFC scanning, scheduled blocking, and user-created routines to provide these features.
2. Information We Collect
We collect only the information needed to provide, improve, secure, and support Slate.
The Slate app does not require an account. When you place an order, contact support, or otherwise communicate with us, we may collect:
- Name, email address, and contact information
- Shipping and billing address
- Order contents, transaction amount, fulfillment, and support history
- Messages, photographs, or other information you voluntarily send to support
Slate App Data
The app can provide its core functionality without an account or internet connection. Routine and preference information may be stored locally on your iPhone.
Depending on the app version, settings, and diagnostic permissions, Slate or Apple may process:
- Blocking routines and schedules
- Selected blocking modes
- Session start and end times
- Whether a blocking session is active
- Activity history, such as completed sessions
- App preferences and settings
- Onboarding progress
- Crash reports and diagnostic information
NFC Block Data
Depending on Apple's privacy-protective APIs, Slate may store app, category, website, or shield-selection data needed to apply blocking. Where Apple provides protected or opaque tokens, Slate uses those tokens only to provide the blocking feature.
When you use a Slate NFC Block, we may collect or store:
- Block or tag ID
- Block name or number
- Whether the Block is connected to your device
- NFC scan events
- Whether a scan successfully blocked or unblocked apps
- Duplicate-scan or setup status during onboarding
Device and Technical Data
NFC tags only store or open a tag identifier or URL. NFC tag IDs are not passwords and should not be treated as secret by themselves.
We may collect:
- Device type
- iOS version
- App version
- Crash reports
- Diagnostic logs
- Basic usage events
- IP address or approximate region from website or server logs
Website Data
When you visit our website, PostHog and our hosting provider may collect:
- Browser type
- Device type
- Pages viewed
- Referring pages
- Basic analytics
- Cookies or similar technologies if enabled
- Session interactions or replay data configured to avoid payment-card collection
3. Information We Do Not Sell
We do not sell your personal information.
We do not use your Slate blocking data to target ads.
We do not use your selected blocked apps, routines, NFC scans, or focus sessions for third-party advertising.
4. How We Use Information
We use information to:
- Provide app-blocking and unblocking features
- Connect NFC Blocks to your app
- Run onboarding
- Save routines and preferences
- Detect duplicate or invalid NFC scans
- Apply and remove app shields
- Process and fulfill purchases
- Improve reliability and performance
- Debug crashes or technical issues
- Prevent abuse or unauthorized access
- Respond to support requests
- Comply with legal obligations
5. Screen Time, Family Controls, and Permissions
Slate may ask for permission to use Apple Screen Time-related features, such as Family Controls, Managed Settings, Device Activity, or similar Apple frameworks.
These permissions are used to let Slate block and unblock selected apps, categories, or websites.
Slate does not use these permissions to access private messages, photos, calls, passwords, or unrelated personal content.
You can revoke permissions through iOS settings where available, but some Slate features may stop working if permissions are removed.
6. NFC Tags and Security
Slate NFC Blocks work by storing or opening a tag identifier or URL.
Anyone with physical access to a tag may be able to scan or copy the NFC data. For that reason:
- Slate does not treat the NFC URL alone as proof of identity.
- Production tags should use random, non-guessable IDs.
- Backend verification may be used to confirm that a tag is real, registered, and connected to the correct user or device.
- You should not share your Slate tag URL or tag ID publicly.
7. How We Share Information
We may share limited information with service providers that help us operate Slate. These currently include Stripe for payment processing, Vercel for website hosting, PostHog for website analytics, Apple for the app and iOS platform, and carriers or fulfillment providers used to deliver orders.

12. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards to protect information. However, no system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
You are responsible for keeping your iPhone and Slate Blocks secure.

Slate may include links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties.
